It felt like only minutes after Kalon had opened his eyes and saw the beautiful sight that was Steele beside him in that rotten place. He shuddered, he could still feel that asshole’s hands as they tied him up. Forcing down the bile that rose in the back of his throat. He had to snap out of it. He got lucky… they hadn’t had time to carry out their threats…. and Steele would need him to be somewhat coherent. He could deal with everything else later. If he didn’t think about it, then it hadn’t happened.

A thought struck him… shit… did Steele know? Did he know it was Tom? “Um...” Kalon paused and drew in a shaky breath, cleared his throat and tried again. “It was Tom.” He stated. “Tom took me from Texas and brought me here.” He choked back a sob. He forced himself to continue as Steele needed to know. “You need to be careful Steele… it was Tom.”

Kalon slammed against the jeep’s door as Steele whipped the vehicle onto the hard shoulder, or the grass verge that passed as a hard shoulder in this Godforsaken country. He didn’t resist when Steele unclipped his belt and hauled him over the gearstick and the center console. Once he was straddling Steele’s lap with his back pressed up against the steering wheel. Steele wrapped one arm around his back and the other pressed to Kalon’s head into the curve of his neck. Steele’s breaths ruffled his hair with each hard exhale.

“I am so fucking sorry Kalon. I didn’t know he would come after you. So, fucking sorry.” Steele’s voice hitched and was filled with more emotion than Kalon had ever seen from him, except for maybe the night Steele had told him he loved him. Lifting Kalon’s head with a finger on his chin Steele looked deep into his eyes, the bleakness he saw reflecting back at him was scary. He had never seen it in his eyes before. “He was in the house I just blew up. He can’t come after you again.”

Kalon was sure his jaw had hit his knees, “you… umm… you blew up Fritz’s brother?” Even though the asshole had taken him, Kalon couldn’t help but feel a little regret for his friend, and boss, who had lost the only member of his family he had left.

“Stop it Kal. I can see your brain whirling. This is not your fault. If it’s anyone’s it is mine… as I didn’t think Tom was a threat. I thought he knew it was an undercover role. I never thought he would come after you.”

The devastated tone in Steele’s voice struck a chord deep inside him. “It’s not your fault. You didn’t know.” He froze as a thought occurred to him.

“What?” Steele asked. “What’s wrong.”

“Do you think Fritz knew?”

“I don’t know Kal… I’d like to think not… but the people I have been counting on lately have been turning out not to be as reliable as I thought—"

Kalon put his fingers over Steele’s lips stopping him from saying more.
